The boys in the Charlie Shafter Band don’t take themselves too seriously. But when it comes to their music, these guys are awful hard workers. All the proof you need is in their album “17th And Chicago” and their new single “Not My Girl” which mixes Texas country with a little Goo Goo Dolls/Lifehouse style. This combination is infectious - in a good way.

The Charlie Shafter Band set out to do two things when it formed: 1) to clarify the pronunciation of the word barrette, and 2) to prove the Aztecs did indeed invent the vacation. In accordance with prophecy, four ant farmers will drop their small ant farming shovels and pick up musical instruments. Joel (The Frugal) is awarded the power of rhythm. Charlie (The Meek) is endowed with spongy vocals. A power from above enables Clayton (The Just) to funk it up. Read the rest of this entry »

So this is the Llano Idea blog. My name is yet to be determined, but I will be brainstorming overtime to have a handle of sorts for all those reading. I was once known as A-prime (A’), but those days are over. I will be posting every Monday to review the shows of the past week and to preview the shows coming up.
Last Wednesday saw the return of Reverend Deadeye to Lubbock. His last show here at Whiskey Dix was a bit under-attended for a number of reasons. Thankfully, the kids came out this time (to Bash’s), and Deadeye put on an amazing set. He started off wearing a blindfold and tore into his one-man band sound of distorted blues vocals and various percussion affiliates. His incantations are of a more earthy, poor man’s struggle variety, and pair well with the lifestyle he leads – play a show, go to sleep, drive the van with the dog to the next town, repeat. Deadeye once called Denver home, but these days he lives nowehere and everywhere.

Attention fans of quirky folk-pop: Joey Kendall of Mount Righteous will be playing a free show at the Boiler Room in Denton tonight. But, even if Mount Righteous’ acoustic marching-band-style pop music isn’t your thing (read: you hate them), don’t write Kendall off.

There are so many words that don’t come when the question in question is asked in a bar that is religiously jamming “Pussy Control” at decibels even Alexander Graham Bell never imagined.
Music is a very strange animal, and it’s an animal that can most certainly destroy you if you don’t treat it with respect and give it distance.

The Charlie Shafter Band Web site takes a while to load. But the payoff is in its better-than-average layout, superimposing the four mildly attractive band members atop a pop-arty scheme of green shades and random swirly shapes. The music on the player isn’t bad, either—folksy, but too well mastered to sound like rough-around-the-edge Texas country. The riffs are catchy and country, but the guitar contained; The Goo Goo Dolls without the late-90s stigma and gay hair.
Perhaps they sound different because they are. Shafter hails from Illinois. “That’s why we can’t really claim we play Texas country, because people might get offended,” he says.

Charlie Shafter and the Gnomes tour extensively, but they always manage to clear off a spot on their calendar for the Hub City.
Cranking out an original hodge-podge of Southern rock and 80’s pop, Lubbock fans are never disappointed by the band’s impressive set.
